MARA SHINERS ACADEMY

Mara Shiners was started in May 2015 with around 30 pupils enrolling. Its growth has been gradually on the rise. It now boasts a population approaching 400 pupils.

The boarding facility was launched in July 2016, to allow pupils have unlimited access to education and the school’s facilities without having interruptions when going home and back daily. This has had tremendous positive impact on the pupils ensuring they continue to study uninterrupted, thereby leading to improved performance for the individual learners and the school at large.

The launch of the school to a boarding facility also provided great employment opportunities to the community. The school employs 3 cooks, 3 matrons, 2 security officers and 15 teachers whose majority are from the community. This initiative has not only boosted the community but also enhanced their confidence in the school’s capabilities.

The performance of the school has been consistent above average, thanks to the highly trained and skilled teachers that the school employs. Last year’s [2023] mean score was 347.68/500, making the school the best performing in the zone. The pioneer pupils who did their first national exam at the school have now completed the secondary school education and they have continued to score very highly, with all of them securing placement in the public universities.

The learners obtain wholesome training not only in education and subjects taught, but also in other aspects like spirituality, socially and in extra-curricular activities. The school has scheduled mentorship sessions every Friday and Saturday on different aspects, ensuring that learners are instilled values and virtues for wholesome living.

Mara Shiners has been at the center of transformation, ensuring it remains resilient in the face of changes. With the recent Kenyan Education curriculum change to a Competency Based Curriculum [CBC], the school remained resilient and quickly adapted to the change. Immense gratitude to our Sponsors for ensuring we are not only prepared for the change but we have well equipped facilities for this transition. The school has well-equipped science, computer, home science and music laboratories, and installed Wi-Fi connectivity. All this has made the implementation of CBC easier.

The school is located at Oloolaimutia, 4km to the great Masai Mara Game Reserve [Oloolaimutia Gate], in Narok West Sub-County, Narok County.

Special recognition and gratitude to our partners and sponsors George and Susan Menking Family. They have been an inspiration and integral part of our story; ensuring that all the remarkable infrastructure we have at the school is in place. This is all from the classrooms, dormitories, the junior school with all the special rooms, installation of solar power, the electric fence and a borehole that guarantees continuous water supply, not only to the school but the community at large. We could not have achieved this without their invaluable support!

Our gratitude to all other stakeholders who have made this possible! Long live Mara Shiners Academy!
